Who we are

The Rattan Association of Cambodia responds to 2 vital needs: provide ‘green’ rattan product buyers with a range of sustainable, high-quality rattan products, while strengthening the Cambodian rattan industry’ sustainable practices. Specifically, the association focuses on:

  • creating market links
  • promoting sustainable rattan resources management
  • strengthening collaboration within the rattan community (including rattan pre-processors and rattan enterprises).

Work for the development of rattan enterprises, to increase employment opportunities, and to ensure sustainable natural resources management to support green rattan production and trade in Cambodia.

The Rattan Association of Cambodia has as mission to collaborate and cooperate with all stakeholders to:

  • promote and increase ‘green’ rattan production quality to reach international standards, for exporting at fair prices and fair wages for producers, and
  • protect rattan forests and natural fiber resources through public awareness, and support and promote policies that protect rattan forests.

To fulfill its mission, the Association carries out the following activities:

  • Seeking legal status for rattan producers at the central and local level
  • Promoting green Cambodian rattan products for international export, with government support – reducing bureaucracy, increasing smoother trading channels
  • Promoting green Cambodian rattan products locally and internationally through trade fairs and other means available
  • Prohibiting the export of raw rattan material and encouraging replanting of rattan
  • Increasing knowledge, skills and attitude of stakeholders on the management of sustainable forests and improving the quality of production through exposure and exchange and other available means
  • Monitoring rattan trading in Cambodia

The Rattan Association of Cambodia was established in 2009 with the participation of 11 small and medium Cambodian rattan enterprises, and a delegation and representatives from the Forestry Administration, the Ministry of the Environment, business enterprises, local and international NGOs, and other relevant institutions.

The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF-Cambodia) and the Artisan’s Association of Cambodia (AAC) played a catalytic role in the association’s establishment.

Recognized by the Royal Government of Cambodia, the association’s statutes and by-laws are registered with the Ministry of Commerce. As of March 30 2011, the Rattan Association is a Provisional Member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO).

Current activities

The Rattan Association of Cambodia is now working closely with government institutions, NGOs, handicraft, private sector, and rattan communities in 5 provinces: Preah Sihanouk, Koh Kong, Kampot, Kampong Thom, and Preah Vihear Province, but also other provinces in Cambodia.

Over time, the association hopes to expand its target sites to all of Cambodia in order to establish market linkages and rattan resources management, while strengthening the collaboration between rattan communities, rattan pre-processors, rattan enterprises and the Rattan Association of Cambodia itself.

It is expected that this will improve understanding of sustainable rattan while improving the effectiveness of sustainable rattan production and harvest, increasing job opportunities and developing the market for communities in Cambodia.
